Best Time to Get Married in Zurich
Zurich lies in a mild climate zone and has four very distinct seasons, all of which are incredibly beautiful in their own way. If you want to plan for a warm day with a bit of sun, we would recommend choosing a date between May and October. By May, the daytime temperature can reach around 20C, but it can still be pretty wet. June marks the official start of summer, with July and August being the hottest and sunniest months of the year. By September, things have started to cool down again, it’s not quite as warm as August, but the weather tends to be sunnier and drier. October is the beginning of the golden months, it can cool down quite quickly with some wet and/or foggy days expected in the Autumn, and by the end of November, it’s chilly with a lot of cloud cover and even the first snow. Winter starts in December, where high-lying fog covers the city most days.
As a rule of thumb, it’s best to make sure your wedding venue has a plan B if you’re thinking of having your weddings outdoors.
Can foreigners get married in Switzerland?
Fortunately for foreigners, both residents and non-residents can tie the knot with relative ease in Switzerland. That said, it does take some preparation to get everything sorted before you can say your ‘I do’s’.
In order for two Foreign nationals without residence in Switzerland to get married in Switzerland, you will need to meet the following legal requirements:
- the couple must be over 18
- neither must be already married
- those with a legal guardian must have their consent prior to getting married
- the law prohibits marriage between (half-)brothers or (half-)sisters, between a person and his or her parent (natural or adoptive) or grandparents
It’s at the discretion of the canton in which you decide to get married whether to authorise a marriage between two non-residents. You would need to submit an application at the Registry Office you intend to get married at, including a number of documents. If you’re living abroad, you can submit your application via the Swiss Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. These documents can take a while to get together, and photocopies are not accepted, so it’s best to start planning early to prevent any last minute issues if documents don’t arrive on time. Further information can be found here.
